Ricki-Lee's UK Makeover From Hell

Ricki-Lee's amazing "Can't Touch It" has been butchered, almost beyond recognition, for its UK release on the 9th of June. Not only has the song been given the dubious new title "U Wanna Little Of This", it's been remixed into an unremarkable dance bore. Don't get me wrong, this kind of shit usually has me salivating but "Can't Touch It" is such a perfect pop song that this kind of treatment feels completely sacrilegious. Everything I love about the original is gone. The fabulous rolling drum beats, the quirky pop production and the subtle R'n'B flavour have all been ditched in favour of thudding dance beats and a cut and paste chorus. I would probably be singing the praises of "U Wanna Little Of This" if it were a remix but as the version being promoted to UK radio, it just doesn't cut it. It's such a shame because the original version has huge hit potential. "Can't Touch It" is perfect pop. The song is fresh, original and utterly infectious. "U Wanna Little Of This", on the other hand, sounds like a Booty Luv B-side. That's not a bad thing as such but Ricki-Lee deserves better than this. Decide which version you prefer, the new and unimproved version above or the original version below.

I nearly cried when I heard it. the video especially doesn't fit.

I dunno how original Can't Touch It is though, it sounds an awful lot like that Gia Farrell song, but surely it's never-endign run on the Aussie charts is indication of the song's hit potential without turning it into a Caskanka reject!

It's especially annoying because "Can't Touch It" is one of the few upbeat instant pop numbers on the album. I actually think some of the slower tracks could benefit from the Hed Kandy treatment but this is just rubbish. They had better not fuck with "Love Is All Around"!!!

The vocals are too fast! Remember the atrocities committed to Madonna's Human Nature? And the video doesnt fit now!

Terrible!

The remix transforms Ricki Lee from a sexy aussie minx into an english slapper who would probably down bacardi breezers during happy hour with Kelly Llorena before going for a spray tan.

Like you said, as a remix - great, as the version being launched to TV and radio - depressing! The original is waaay better. Also watching her strut at double time through the clip is hilarious lol
They should send both versions to TV and radio & let the public decide which one they like the best. Surely it would boost sales quite a bit too :)

I prefer the original version!

Yeah, I'm not impressed either--what's with all these UK versions sapping the life out of songs? I love September, but the UK remix of "Cry For You" is vastly inferior to any of the other main versions in my opinion. It's a shame--I really do like the original "Can't Touch It" (which does sound more original, come to that).

Johnny - Is it possible for 'Human Nature' to sound even worse?

Jamie - LOL! One can only hope Ricki-Lee follows in the glorious footsteps of the orange goddess!

Arlen - That's a great idea. I hope they at least include the original version on the maxi single.

PPG - I know! I hate the UK version of "Cry For You" too. It lacks the warmth that made it fabulous to begin with. Much like this crap. I just hope Ricki-Lee experiences the same kind of chart success as September!

Oh you lot... you're crazy! How can you compare SHIT like Cascada and September to quality house music from the Hed Kandi label? Hed Kandi releases quality music, while AATW (and now, Hard2Beat Records, the "new AATW" label) releases SHIT dance music.

I think the "remix" is 100% times better than the original. Rickie Lee should be rimming Hed Kandi's asses for releasing her "stuff" in the UK. She is one of the most inoffensive (offensive?) "pop star"s from Australia.

Sorry Mike... had to tell it like it is. Ha ha.

First of all; I really don't think September is shit at all. Cascada can go and suck a fuck, but not September; that's quality pop.

I'm with Kevin on one thing however; I prefer this new remix as I hated the original, just as I hated that Gia Farrell track it sounds exactly like, just like I hated Pon De Replay which Gia's track was ripping off. But I have a soft spot for Ricki-Lee, even if I hated her last album.

"Love Is All Around" has potential to be a big hit in the UK without being remixed;

Back to September though, I agree on the UK vs Original debate of THAT song; The original SHITS all over the new version. Still, it's selling.

The original is sublime and sounds nuthin like Gia fucking Farrell or Pon De Replay.. what r you smoking/ That nu version is a disgrace. It actually sounds worse than Cascada.. and thats sayin somthing!!!!

BTW this is being released by Hard2Beat NOT Hed Kandi.
I have to disagree with you guys about the UK mix of 'Cry For You'. While I am a big September fan and a fan of the original, the new mix gives it a bit more oomph and I think it's superior to the original. The Jackal mix also kicks the original's ass!

Lets put aside the "video" issues...and examine the versions...

I love love love love love love love the original-nothing will, er, touch it.

The new version....I adore too. Sorry but here me out. It really works and could be huge here in the UK whereas the original would have flopped without a trace. Can't Touch It and songs like it were being released here a few years ago and if it didn't have Beyonce attached to it such songs were flopping (I am talking about Vanessa Williams and her amazing Whipped. I am talking about Terri's amazing Whoopsi Daisy which came out nearly three years ago, flopped and sits very close to rickie-Lee)...

In fact...check out the video for Whoopsi Daisy. Its rather similar in themes/vibe/message to Rikki's. http://youtube.com/watch?v=YxN07ucUJEQ
Its also a really cute/funny video. All of which you'd think would work...not so. It flopped. Which is perhaps why the Rikki track has been remixed...to ensure it has the best chance of being a success. As much as i do love the original, it would never do well here. I don't know why but previous songs of that similar sound (and quality) have all crashed without a trace despite huge budgets and profiles of the singers involved (For example..Terri's video for Whoopsie includes Estelle, the girl from Mis-teeq and some other star cameos).

Kevin - I know that Hed Kandi has a more credible reputation than AATW but it doesn't change the fact that this effort stinks. I kind of agree with you about September and Cascada but I still love them regardless/ perhaps because of their craptasticness.

Dan - Yep, it's abysmal.

Adem - Sorry but the original sounds nothing like Pon De Replay! It was obviously influenced by Xtina's "Ain't No Other Man" with the retro R'n'B tone but it's hardly derivative. We'll have to agree to disagree about Ricki-Lee's album. I think it's bliss!

Matt - I'm with you.

Arlen - The promos are labelled "Hed Kandi" with their logo, so I highly doubt it's a Hard2Beat release.

Rob - I know the UK likes rubbish dance music but just take a look at the charts. It's full of urban pop these days. I think the original's blend of commercial pop with a touch of R'n'B would be perfect UK chart fodder. Don't get me wrong, I really do hope this version is huge but I can't bring myself to like it - yet.

Oh it's always so animated here. I love it. I have penis, er i mean comments envy :) This reminds me of when Faith Hill was forced to perform a dance remix of one of her country hits on Top Of The Pops. I have never seen anyone look more mortified or forced into something in my life - not since my friends Shaneez's shotgun wedding, anyway...

OMG, they ruined it. Can't Touch It had HIT written all over it. Still does, but this new version is just the suck.

=(

My bad! Thought it was on the Hard2Beat label coz it's on their new compilation "Hard2Beat Club Anthems 2008"!

the UK version is obviously jumping on the "Freemasons" reversions of Kelly and Beyonce. I have to admit I like both however. Hopefully the CD release will have both versions!

Ministry of sound are not fuckin the sounds up, its her choice to release the remix its her song.. She wasnt signed to any label in the uk, and ministry signed her but wanted to release a remix, its a dance label so thats what they will release... Dont know what you guys are on about, she released the song on their label, they cant release anything under her name without her say so...
