Risk It For A Biscuit

The music industry could show the rest of the business world a thing or two about recycling. I'm not talking about the rampant sampling that goes on or the flood of cover versions but the popular practice of reviving old ideas. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Take the UK's fabulous new girlband Electrovamp - they strike me as the reincarnation of Shampoo with a touch of Daphne & Celeste thrown in for good measure. We've heard it all before but in comparison to their lacklustre pop contemporaries, Electrovamp sound positively groundbreaking. Despite a mixed response to their debut single in the UK, "I Don't Like The Vibe In The VIP" has been picked up for an Australian release - probably to cash in on the success of another electropop duo, The Veronicas. Yes, familiarity is a highly prized commodity in the pop world!

Electrovamp are two naughty teenage sisters from Cardiff. I can't find a lot of information about Tammy and Kally on the net but it appears they previously performed under the name Cookie and Kute - and suffered the indignity of supporting Sluts Aloud on their "Waking Up The Neighbours" tour. In fact, there is more than a touch of Xenomania about "I Don't Like The Vibe In The VIP". The formulaic beats, pounding bass and guitar are all on display. Thankfully, the song is saved from being another electro-bore by the fun lyrics and Electrovamp's cheeky attitude. The dirty dollies chirp "I'll be your schoolgirl dream" before promising "I'll make you scream like you ain't done it in ages!" This is exactly the kind of cheerfully tawdry filth Shampoo would be making if they were still around today. As much as I like the song, the video (below) sealed the deal for me. Girls flashing their tits, a lesbian orgy in the pool, coke snorting and simulated oral sex - for a while there I thought I was watching an episode of "Skins"!

"I Don't Like The Vibe In The VIP" is released in Australia on the 3rd of March. You can pre-order your copy here. I particularly like the Jack Rokka mix, which you can hear on Electrovamp's myspace.

ooo i saw them at my local club and although i had heard about them on the blogworld i hadn't heard anything. they are even trashier live than you can imagine which is a very amazing thing indeed. They sang two songs but i don't remember the second because a lesbian elbowed me in the head to get closer to them and i had to wallow in the drama of it all.

I've always dismissed Electrovamp because of the Bores Afoul connection - maybe I should give them another try? They have nothing on Shampoo yet though!

First Billiam and now Electrovamp? Paul, I need to go to that club! Maybe they'll do a whirlwind promo tour of Australia if "VIP" is a stunning #78 smash. One can dream.

Oh Tommie, I was the same. Anything even remotely related to Whores Aloud turns my stomach but Electrovamp dissed them by saying they prefer the Sugababes, so I got over it!

Where's the love for Girls Aloud around this place? They are clearly the greatest girlband of ALL TIME!

Anywho, have been loving this song since the beginning of the year, even though it sounds soooo much like Bodyrox's "Yeah, yeah"!

WAAAAAH at the rubbishing of my might Aloud. But YAY for your love of Electrovamp; those bitches are ace. Will radio pick it up? Already heard it on Joy FM and I've been playing it on my show on Pulse FM; will the Nova/Fox/Austereo types take a liking to it??

I have this Cd. I treasure it. It charted way into the high 100's. I was one of few who bought it.

Adem - sorry my love but we have to disgaree on GA! I doubt the big networks will play Electrovamp, the song is out in a couple of weeks and it still hasn't been added. Good to know that you're giving it a whirl!

Rob - did it really bomb that badly? I hope their album still appears.

Robpop said...

yeah. It bombed hard. Seriously hard. No.165 (i think, correct me if I am wrong).

The girls had "distribution issues" but not of the usual kind..The cd wasnt out. Then it was. Then it wasnt. Then you couldnt find it. In some places it was on sale on the week it wasnt released. When it was officially released the CD had been removed from stores.

Then there was the issue that it sounded somewhat like a Bodyrox song that was out that week.

Tis a shame cos i was hoping to celebrate their album which is not yet done..but it was a concept dance album-something of which sounds brilliantay!

They are awful, along with that Luciana thing and Hoez Afoul.

I am with Arlen and Adem, what's with the Girls Aloud hate? They are amazing!

They can't sing, they can't dance and their music is overproduced rubbish regurgitated from the bowels of Xenomania. I could go on...

These dolls probably bump coconuts.

Bad homosexual!!
It kills me whenever someone says they can't sing! They got where they were via a singing competition in which they sand live on every week! Everyone knows they can sing, they sing live all the time now as well!
I also think Cheryl is one of the best dancers I have ever seen... however I will say that Sarah is not the best lol
